Wonder honey

So it’s certainly cold season in my office. Offices can be worse than classrooms for illnesses as the conditioned air can spread a virus very quickly. Nearly everyone on my team has fallen ill lately and I am doing everything I can to fend it off. My wonder honey certainly goes a long way to stave it off.

This immune boosting honey can be put into hot water as a morning drink, into porridge, with milk amongst a myriad of other options.

The ingredients in this honey all help to fight off symptoms of a cold or flu and there best part, there are only five of them. It tastes great too.

1. Honey

Honey is a go to when I’m ill, it soothes the throat and gives your immune system a boost. I use any honey for this mixture, I decided to go for Mexican Orange Blossom honey which is nice and sweet.

2. Ginger

Fresh ginger is a very powerful anti-inflammatory which soothes a sore throat quickly and kills a number of viruses that cause a cold in the first place. I keep mine in the freezer so that it grates easily.

3. Lemon zest

Lemon zest is often overlooked for lemon juice however it can often be more powerful. Zest is packed with vitamin C which aids the immune system in resisting infections.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric is the dream ingredient for anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s active ingredient is curcumin which is a complete rockstar in the world on anti-viral properties and it helps target infections. 5. Black pepper

Black pepper increases the body’s absorption of turmeric which means that it will work faster and more significantly.

This mixture is very easy to make, just follow the steps below:

  1. Pour honey into a measuring jug and grate all ingredients in. I use 3 cm of turmeric, 5cm of ginger and the zest of a whole lemon
  2. Grind the pepper mill 3 times in the mixture and stir all ingredients together
  3. Decant into desired jar (I use the honey jar)
  4. Leave for a few days for the ingredients to infuse and then use at leisure.

Each morning when I get to the office I put two teaspoons of this into a mug of hot water.

This is also good if you are unlucky enough to get a cold as its properties speed up the recovery time drastically.
